Course Investment Strategy

Northcliffe Golf Club is now in the 2nd phase of a major investment in the on course drainage, aimed at improving the all year round playability of the golf course.   This phase of the drainage will be installing 1800m of mainline drainage pipe into the existing network and this work will take place in July 2024.  This follows 3000m of mainline drainage that was installed as part of phase one of the drainage modernisation in the Spring of 2021.

In July we have a meeting with the River Aire Flood Management expert to look at how our drainage & water management interacts with the view of helping each other.

A trial of this will take place in the Autumn of 2024, along with sand injection of all the greens, which is designed to improve the infiltration rate of the greens through the top surface as well as improving the firmness of the putting greens for improved playability all year round for our members.

Course Tree Strategy

The intention is to enhance the health and appearance of our many established trees and to care for the young plantations on the course. A good start has been made in the winter of 2023/24 but there is still much more to do with the help of the Bradford Council Woodlands and Conservation Officer.

We have started to remove many diseased and dying trees from the course. There are still several trees with obvious trunk decay and dieback in the crown. These will be addressed in the winter of 2024/25 and removed in stages to protect the integrity
of the groups of trees.

Removal of Leylandii Cypress trees from the side of the 2nd tee and behind the 2nd green. These had been blocking the light from surrounding trees and reducing airflow. Leylandii are of little benefit to wildlife and the mature trees around the 2nd tee box will quickly fill out and the health of the surrounding grass will rapidly improve.  More removal of these trees will take place in the coming years across the course and replaced with young plantation tress.

There has been extensive pruning of bushes across the whole course and the removal of the low-level branches between the fairways and along the edge of the course.   There are many thriving oak trees around the course and the next generation of young trees have been identified and protected.

Our Arboriculture expert will be performing a site visit in July 2024 to review what has been done & help guide the next stages now the trees are in full leaf.
